Can You Control the Price of Gas?

Football season is back. Football fans everywhere are excited, enthused and hopeful for their favorite team! And, of course, there have been a lot of preseason interviews.

I'm not a huge football fan, but while driving last week, I punched up the sports station and I heard part of an interview on the radio. The host was talking to NFL player Mario Williams, who plays for the Houston Texans. I only heard the end of the conversation. And at that point, the host was asking Mario how he handled all the negative publicity.

I was curious, so I later read that in his first year there was a lot of bad press and criticism over Houston signing North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams instead of USC running back and Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush as the #1 pick in the draft. However, Mario's excellent performance on the field has since silenced all the critics.

The host kept asking Mario how he handled it. What did he do with his mind? How did he not let all that bother him?

Mario then made a statement that I thought was a gem. He said, "If I can't control it, I don't focus on it."

That is a great habit to apply in so many areas of life. For example, can you control the price of gasoline? No. Is there something that you can do to cause the price of gas to be lowered? No. So, why stay focused on it? Why waste your time and energy thinking about it and talking to other people about it?

Have you ever noticed how it makes you feel when you either think about how high the gas prices are, or, talk to other people about it? Do you feel inspired? No. That's why it is a waste of your time and energy. The price of gas is out of your control.

How about the housing market? What about the stock market? Can you control those markets? No. So why stay focused on issues that you have no control over? Why waste your valuable time and energy worrying about things that you have no control over?

Here's a good one. Can you control other people's opinions of you? No. Then don't focus on it. As my children were growing up, I used to tell them over and over, "You can't please everyone, so stop trying to!" Again, why waste all that time and energy on something you have no control over?

On the other hand, we really ought to focus on the things that we can control. Since we have free will, we can control our own minds and then determine what we will think about and focus on. Well then, why not focus on what God has promised us instead of what the TV newsman is prophesying about every night?

Have you ever noticed that so much of the "news" is not new at all? So much of it is just the same old gloom and doom, repackaged for us. And how do you feel after watching some of that stuff? Are you inspired? Are you motivated? Why not put your focus, your trust, and your confidence in God? He has promised to supply all that you need. And, have you ever noticed that the promises you can read in Bible do not have disclaimers? There is no small print that says, "This promise of supplying all your need is available...unless the price of gas goes over four dollars!"

No, you won't find any disclaimers with God's promises. You won't find any "void where prohibited," or, "limited time only" offers. All God asks is that we accept His promises as true and believe them.

So, no matter what is going on around you, regardless if the markets are up or down, no matter what the price of gasoline is today, you can choose to accept and believe the promises of God. You can choose to stay focused on those, and be expecting to receive.

And, like Mario says, "If you can't control it, then don't focus on it!"

Recumbent Bicycle

Recumbent bicycles have been around nearly as long as the traditional upright model has. However, this bike didn't really gain in popularity until the 20th century. It was then that the world bicycle land speed record was set by a recumbent bicycle. Racing officials decided that recumbent bikes had an unfair advantage over the upright models and so they were prohibited from international biking competitions. Today, the recumbent bike is making a comeback, especially the recumbent tricycle.

Recumbent bicycles come in several variations. The first variation is the low racer. This model is designed for speed and it is commonly found in bike races and in bicycle competitions that feature bikers with mobility limitations. Their seat is positioned so that it sits inline with the wheels instead of on top of the wheels to improve the bike's performance. A windshield is also sometimes added to these models to cut down on wind drag.

The second variation of recumbent bicycle is the tandem recumbent. This model is built like a regular tandem bicycle, however, both seats in the recumbent bike are reclined instead of set upright. This type of recumbent usually is designed as a tandem tricycle, but tandem recumbent bicycles are also available.

The third variation of recumbent bicycle is the recumbent tricycle. This model has one wheel in the front that is used for steering and a pair of wheels in the back. You can take advantage of the space between the back wheels by installing a storage rack or a second seat.

The recumbent bicycle has several advantages over the traditional bicycle. It offers bikers more configuration options, it is a safer bike, it is more comfortable and it is generally faster. However, while recumbent bicycles have several distinct advantages, they also have a few disadvantages. These disadvantages include: they are harder to balance, you can't stand up on the pedals when climbing a hill, they have a wider turn radius and they cost up to 15 percent more than a traditional bicycle.

Bicycle Safety - Selecting the Right Bicycle Seats

I've been riding a bike for over forty years and I can't think of any other part of bike that generates as much discussion among novices as the bike seat. Most people simply don't understand why you have to ride on such a hard skinny seat. Many new cyclists use them for a while and then replace them with a "wide cushy seat" only to revert back after using the wide seat for a while. For the cyclist that is only doing short rides of a few miles a wide cushy or springy seat works fine. However, those that are riding more than a few miles eventually realize these nice cushy seats are more uncomfortable.

Fortunately, seat design has come along way and they are being designed to better fit our backends. There is such a variety of seat designs that it easy to be overwhelmed by the choices. It is easier to say, choose a seat that fits your shape than it is to do. It may take some time. The only way to see if the seat works is to use it. You will most likely have to try a couple of different seats. Is it worth the effort? Without a doubt. A poor match could literally be a pain in the butt and possibly numbness in your crotch area.

The seat you select should provide support for your pelvic bones or 'sit bones' and the nose of the seat should be narrow enough to prevent chafing when pedaling. For women it is important to look at saddles designed for a women's pelvic bone. The more padding there is the more pedaling energy is absorbed by the seat and not going to the pedals. You will have to decide between energy efficiency and comfort. I tend to lean to the confront side.

Seats come in variety of materials Ranging from the traditional leather, which mold to your form to plastic which vary in hardness, shape, and padding. There are seats with the centers cut out to eliminate pressure in the crotch and eliminate numbness. While these were originally designed for women, the design has carried over into men's seats. I use this type of seat on both my road bike and mountain bike. By the way, a woman's seat is wider in the back to accommodate wider pelvic bones.

Lastly, unless you want to go through the task of finding and breaking in a new seat when you buy new bike; it makes sense to transfer the seat from your old bike to the new one. For more information on buying bicycle, bicycle safety and minor maintenance go to http://www.learntobicycle.com
